BIRD-OF-FEATHER SESSIONS
BoF sessions will be held on Tue. 6, Wed. 7, Thu. 8 and Fri. 9 during daytime, in the same time slots as the regular conference sessions and during lunches or down-times. There will be a special BoF evening session on Wednesday, after presentations end.
Start your planning
If you want to propose a BoF, send its title, the organizer's name and affiliation, a short description and the date, time, and location of the BoF to alopezm@pas.uned.es with "OR10 BoF" in the subject line. During the Conference, to schedule a BoF, you will simply write the BoF title as well as your name and affiliation on one of the BoF Boards located in the registration area.
The organizers will schedule your proposal taking into consideration your preferences and slots availability. BoF schedule information will be included in this page, prior to the event. Changes and new sessions will be posted on announcement boards during the event.
We have rooms and “zones” (group of chairs in designated areas) dedicated to BoF sessions. BoF sessions are not formal presentations with slides or software demonstrations. Instead, the format is casual and open. In the rooms, facilitators will have a microphone and whiteboard to lead discussions.
PROPOSED SESSIONS
TUESDAY 6
Getting the Word Out
Strategic Content Partnerships Across Communities
Organizer: Carol Minton Morris
DuraSpace, Director of Marketing and Communications to the session description
Location: Zone A
Time: 11:30 am
How can we more effectivley propagate organizational news and information as mass market communication channels shrink in favor of personalized networks? Pushing more content out through smaller pipes, more frequently with fewer resources has some organizations wondering how to make their content automate, multiply and work harder. Join this BoF session where we will introduce ourselves and discuss the concept of "strategic content partners":
• Groups and organizations whose news and information align in some ways could become "strategic content partners" in order to collaboratively research, write, share and distribute timely and relevant items of interest to our communities through our collective lists, news feeds and channels. Is this a useful concept? What would it take to form "strategic content partnerships"?
• Participants will "pitch" informal story ideas for discussion and feedback. We will then mix and match ideas, and talk about how we might use story ideas generated by the group to test the concept of "strategic content partnerships"."
PREMIS metadata: making it work in practice
Organizer: Deborah Kaplan, Tufts University
Tuesday 6, 11:30-13:00
Reino Unido A
The DuraSpace Preservation and Archiving Solution Community is fostering a group that aims to develop a community-driven set of standards, best practices, and goals for PREMIS use. This group is going to be driven by real life use cases being put into practice in the here-and-now, drawing on the wider philosophical discussions which have been hashed out elsewhere in the preservation and trustworthy repository space. Initially, the group will be beginning with Fedora, with the goal to moving towards DSpace as things develop. This Birds of a Feather is for those who are interested in participating in the process of putting PREMIS into practice.
Handling of compound objects from an e-Infrastructure point of view
Organizers:
Paolo Manghi - ISTI-CNR (DRIVER / OpenAIRE - http://www.d-net.research-infrastructures.eu/)
Marko Mikulicic - ISTI-CNR (DRIVER / OpenAIRE - http://www.d-net.research-infrastructures.eu/)
Jochen Schirrwagen - Bielefeld University Library (DRIVER / eco4r - http://www.eco4r.org)
Room: Reino Unido A
Time: 16:00-17:00
In the last decade a lot of interest was shown in the problem of managing so-called “compound objects” (COs). These are generally intended as special digital objects, representing a set of digital objects inter-connected by meaningful relationships. A number of interpretations and specializations exist in the literature, and a lot of attention was devoted to: CO abstract modelling, CO management systems, and data-exchange representations and protocols for COs. For example OAI-ORE provides a framework for aggregating and sharing of COs over the Web, the Fedora system addresses storage and indexing of CO and several initiatives target management of special COs; for example, as part of the DRIVER-II project, the essence of "enhanced publications" as a specialization of compound objects was proposed, demonstrators have been shown and the integration into the D-NET infrastructure is ongoing. Given this promising and fertile territory, the aim of this BOF is to share theoretical and practical experiences relating with methods for the aggregation and interpretation of the meaning of related resources, the data modelling, efficient storage, indexing, construction and exporting techniques of compound objects.
WEDNESDAY 7
DL.org - New paths to interoperability: best practices and modelling foundations for digital repositories
Organizers: Giuseppina Vullo, University of Glasgow; Paolo Manghi, ISTI-CNR; Natalia Manola, University of Athens; Stephanie Parker, TRUST-IT

Sonex Deposit BOF
Organizers: Pablo de Castro, Carlos III University Madrid; Richard Jones, Sympletic Ltd.; Mogens Sandfær, Danmarks Tekniske Informationscenter (DTIC)
Location: Room Reino Unido B
Time: 17:30-19:00
Along last year Sonex workgroup has been devoted to analysis of Scholarly Output Notification and Exchange, that is, of potential deposit processes into repositories for scholarly publications from various sources and related interoperability issues. Several relevant usecases have been selected for following their implementation at institutional environments, see http://sonexworkgroup.blogspot.com/. After recent publication of Deposit call by JISC (Feb’10), Sonex was assigned the new role of providing support and eventual coordination for selected bids. We are therefore inviting colleagues taking part in ongoing or future deposit-related projects to debate on different approaches, common problems and chances for avoiding redundancies among them.

COAR and OpenAIRE: Enhancing the Interoperability of Repositories for International Research
Organizers: Norbert Lossau, Goettingen State and University Library; Birgit Schmidt, Goettingen State and University Library; Alicia Lopez-Medina, UNED
Zone A (Room Goya)
Time: 17:30:19:00
Description: Interoperability of open access repositories enhances the visibility of research outputs and adds value to repositories. Therefore, the development and implementation of interoperable standards and consistent policies is important for international repository initiatives.
The “Confederation of Open Access Repositories” (COAR) promotes the interoperability of open access (OA) repositories on an international scale. This is based on the ideas and expertise of now about 50 members and partners world-wide. COAR supports the coordination of global collaborative efforts towards high-quality data and interoperable systems. With its actions COAR aims to support regional and national repository initiatives, to disseminate best practices and to facilitate the discussion on interoperability.
OpenAIRE develops a framework for a European-wide network of repositories to support the implementation of the EU’s Seventh Framework Programme (FP7) Open Access Pilot and the ERC Scientific Council’s Guidelines for Open Access. The three-year project builds up a portal and e-infrastructure for repository networks, supports researchers in depositing their publications and explores data management services.
In this session you will have the opportunity to meet members and partners of both initiatives to join the discussion about areas for collaboration.

THURSDAY 8
Title: Fedora UK&I User Group
Organisers: Chris Awre & Richard Green, University of Hull
Location: Reino Unido A
Time: 13:00 (over lunch)
Description: The Fedora UK&I User Group has held biannual meetings since May
2006, providing a useful forum for exchange of experience and views as we
have all grappled with Fedora. This BOF allows for this to continue in the
context of Open Repositories and is also an opportunity to discuss how the
user group can best support those working with Fedora in the UK and Ireland
(not forgetting our colleagues in the Fedora EU group). Whilst we are all
part of the wider Fedora and DuraSpace communities, how can a more local
geographic user group be of value in supporting specific needs? How can we
support others getting going with Fedora to help build the local community
and learn from each other?
